The Quartz Shock — The Day Japan Toppled Switzerland

On Christmas Day 1969, the world's first quartz wristwatch was born in a small Japanese laboratory. Switzerland, the kingdom of mechanical watches, was swept under by a wave of cheap, accurate timepieces, facing an unprecedented crisis that halved both its jobs and its companies. Was it a revolution, or a tragedy?

December 25, 1969. Christmas Day. From a factory in Suwa, Nagano Prefecture, Japan, a single wristwatch was shipped that would split the history of timekeeping in two: the ‘Seiko Quartz Astron 35SQ.’ Powered by the vibration of a quartz crystal, it was the world’s first mass-produced quartz wristwatch.

For nearly five hundred years, humankind had measured time with mechanical watches that you wound by spring and ran by gears. Switzerland stood at the summit of that world. Everyone believed that the essence of a watch lay in precise machinery assembled by hand by skilled craftsmen. That common sense was rewritten in just over a decade by a single battery and a tiny sliver of crystal. The event later called the ‘Quartz Shock’ was no war that anyone intended. Yet as a result, Switzerland, the kingdom of mechanical watches, suffered a blow that cost it half its body.

A Decade Built Up in a Suwa Laboratory

When you apply voltage to quartz, it vibrates accurately a fixed number of times per second. This property (the piezoelectric effect) had been known since the first half of the twentieth century. The challenge was fitting that vibration into a box small enough to wear on the wrist.

Seiko (manufactured at the time by Suwa Seikosha, today Seiko Epson; sold by its parent company, Hattori Watch Store) took on this difficult problem over ten years. A circuit to make the quartz vibrate stably, a small battery to power it, an integrated circuit to keep power consumption low. Each one was cutting-edge technology of its day. The finished ‘35SQ’ had a movement just 30 millimeters in diameter, and records show it achieved an accuracy of plus or minus 5 seconds a month, on a different order entirely from mechanical watches. Given that mechanical watches of the era drifted by tens of seconds a day, this was a truly revolutionary figure.

Its price, however, was revolutionarily high. The launch price was 450,000 yen, said to be equivalent to a single Toyota ‘Corolla’ at the time. The first quartz watch was a symbol of wealth, not yet a ‘cheap watch.’

The Tsunami of Price Collapse

Quartz, expensive at first, fell in price like an avalanche within just a few years. Whereas mechanical watches required hundreds of precise parts to be assembled by the hands of craftsmen, quartz could produce an accurate watch by combining electronic components, with no skilled hands needed. Its compatibility with mass production was overwhelming.

Japan’s Seiko and Citizen, along with makers in America and Hong Kong, put cheap quartz watches onto the market one after another. Before long, accurate watches you could buy for around a thousand yen spread across the world. ‘Accuracy,’ a value once boasted only by luxury watches, became something within everyone’s reach.

For consumers, it was unmistakably a blessing. Cheap, accurate, and usable for a long time with a battery change. As a tool of daily life, the watch came close to its finished form thanks to quartz. That is precisely why a persistent view holds that this event should be called not the ‘Quartz Shock (crisis)’ but the ‘Quartz Revolution.’ Depending on where you stand, the same fact takes on a different name.

The Winter That Struck Switzerland

But for Switzerland, specialized in mechanical watches, it was no blessing but a storm. The industrial structure that had thrived by selling ‘precise, expensive machines’ was shaken to its roots.

The numbers tell how serious it was. The Swiss watch industry’s workforce, said to be about 90,000 in 1970, is reported to have fallen into the 30,000 range by the mid-1980s. The number of companies, too, is said to have dropped from over 1,600 in 1970 to under 600 by the mid-1980s. In just over a decade, both jobs and companies vanished to less than half. Tens of thousands of jobs were lost, and the watchmaking villages of the Jura Mountains sank into deep recession.

A World Where ‘Accuracy’ Was No Longer a Value

The essence of Switzerland’s crisis was not simply that a cheap competitor had appeared. At a deeper level, the very ‘measuring stick of value’ for watches had broken.

The greatest selling point that Swiss luxury watches had boasted came down, in the end, to ‘keeping time more accurately.’ The complex mechanisms, the painstaking adjustments — all were efforts aimed at the summit of precision. Yet quartz thrust forward the reality that an electronic watch costing a few thousand yen was far more accurate than a mechanical watch costing millions. On the field of precision, mechanical watches could no longer win. That meant the very foundation of value built over five hundred years was crumbling beneath their feet.

Many Swiss watchmakers, staking their survival, set out to produce quartz themselves. But they could not match the Japanese in mass production and price competition, and their plight only deepened. Many distinguished brands fell into financial trouble, and rumors even began to circulate that they might be bought up by foreign capital. The title of ‘the country of watches’ was on the verge of becoming a relic of history.

Would mechanical watches vanish as outdated relics? Would the Swiss watch industry simply rot away in winter? It was a dark age in which everyone could not help but ask such questions. Yet from the very bottom of this despair, a story of counterattack that no one had predicted began. What saved a dying Switzerland was not the most expensive complicated watch but, ironically, a single cheap plastic watch.
